The dividing line

Here's where differences between the Strip and Downtown really present themselves. Click around on our list of recommended hotels and you'll notice that rooms on the Strip are often in the $70-$100 range without even going to the "splurge" resorts. The mid-range hotels Downtown are sometimes only half that.

But price can't be the only deciding factor. If you or your friends want to be caught up in movie-style representations of Las Vegas, you'll want to be on the Strip. If inexpensive gambling and an "Old Time Vegas" feel, Downtown is your place. Proximity to nudie dance clubs in which you will pay dearly for a lap dance: Strip. Daily interaction with near-deranged but highly entertaining street characters: Downtown.

As a rule: The Strip = lobster with all the fancy side; Downtown = a cheap, but filling, hot dog.
